About Us

INTRODUCTION

The mission of Prevent the Aftermath, Inc. (PTA)™

is to promote proactive collaboration to recognize and deter potential active shooter violence and other types of planned violence in the United States and abroad through specialized training and tools. PTA also aims to increase the health and safety of first responders and mental health professionals across the United States with other crucial training, resources and programs not available from their respective municipalities or organizations.

Prevent the Aftermath™ focuses on proactivity: recognizing, assessing and preventing active shooter and other forms of planned violence before it occurs. To do this, we provide training to help law enforcement and mental health professionals for Threat Assessment Teams, then equip them with assessment tools based on validated research to assist in them in determining appropriate next steps for threat management.

What is the difference

between Prevent the Aftermath’s training and others?

Prevent the Aftermath™ focuses on proactivity: and preventing active shooter and other forms of planned violence before they occur. To do this, we provide training to help law enforcement and mental health professionals for Threat Assessment Teams, then equipment them with assessment tools based on validated research to assist in them in determining appropriate next steps for threat management.

How Did PTA Start?

Multiple professionals and subject matter experts in the field prioritized the need for a standardized proactive approach to active shooter training for law enforcement rather than reliance on reaction and tactics. These discussions evolved into conversations with Former Vermont Lt. Gov Molly Gray, Vermont Superior Court Judge Rory Thibault, New Mexico 12th Judicial District Judge Angie Schneider, Former Vermont U.S. Attorney Christina Nolan, Kansas Bureau of Investigations Director Tony Mattivi, and Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson to determine key focus areas and topics, and the tools responders need to keep their communities safe.

A comprehensive training program was created which is geared towards law enforcement, mental health professionals, and prosecutorial attorneys allowing for each to hit the ground running upon their return to their respective communities. The curriculum is based in part on research and investigative best practices garnered from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the US Secret Service (USSS), and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations (KBI).

We are especially grateful for collaboration with Dr. Janja Lalich (an international authority on cults, extremism, and coercion, Dr. Andrew Solomon (Psychologist, author, lecturer and subject matter expert), and Dr. Thomas Powell (Psychologist, subject matter expert and former Director of the Vermont Department of Corrections). PTA was also fortunate in gaining the support, knowledge and guidance of retired FBI Special Agent Katherine Schweit, who was an integral part in the FBI’s initial 2000-2013 active shooter research.

Finally, PTA is honored for the partnership and support from Kyocera, Sony Music, and Verizon.
