Sheriff Stewart is a native of California who had an 18-year career in law enforcement in the Golden State before moving to Dona Ana County, NM. In 1981, she became the first woman police officer hired by the city of Cypress, California. Sheriff Stewart is the first female Sheriff of Dona Ana County, New Mexico.
